Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has unveiled his first major policy proposal as he positions himself for national leadership, promising to transfer greater decision-making powers from Westminster to cities and regions across the United Kingdom if he becomes Prime Minister.

Burnham argues that too much political and economic power is concentrated in London, leaving many regions with limited control over key issues such as transport, housing, healthcare, education, and local economic development. Under his proposal, regional authorities would receive increased funding and stronger powers to make decisions that directly affect their communities.

Supporters say greater devolution would allow local leaders to respond more effectively to regional challenges, create jobs, improve public services, and reduce economic inequality between different parts of the country. Burnham has long advocated for stronger local government, pointing to Greater Manchester’s devolved powers as an example of successful regional governance.

However, critics have questioned whether extensive devolution could create inconsistencies in public services or complicate coordination between national and local governments. They argue that any transfer of powers must be accompanied by clear accountability and sustainable funding.

The proposal is expected to become a key part of Burnham’s political agenda in the coming months. As debate over the future structure of UK governance continues, the issue of devolving power to regional authorities is likely to remain a major topic in British politics.
