France’s state-owned energy company EDF has increased the use of oil-fired power plants after an intense heatwave reduced electricity generation at several nuclear facilities. The move highlights how extreme weather linked to climate change is creating new challenges for countries that depend heavily on nuclear energy.

Many French nuclear reactors rely on rivers for cooling. During periods of exceptionally high temperatures, river water becomes too warm or water levels fall, forcing operators to reduce reactor output or temporarily shut units to comply with environmental regulations designed to protect aquatic ecosystems.

To maintain electricity supplies and avoid power shortages, EDF has temporarily turned to oil-fired generation, despite France’s long-standing efforts to reduce fossil fuel use and cut greenhouse gas emissions. While the measure is intended as a short-term solution, it underscores the difficult balance between ensuring energy security and meeting climate goals.

France generates the majority of its electricity from nuclear power, making it one of the world’s largest producers of low-carbon electricity. However, increasingly frequent heatwaves have exposed vulnerabilities in the country’s energy infrastructure, prompting discussions about strengthening grid resilience and diversifying energy sources.

Energy analysts say rising global temperatures may require utilities to invest in improved cooling technologies, expand renewable energy capacity, and modernize electricity networks to cope with more extreme weather events.The situation also reflects a broader challenge facing Europe, where climate change is affecting power generation from nuclear, hydroelectric, and thermal plants alike. As heatwaves become more common, governments and energy companies will need to adapt infrastructure and planning to ensure reliable electricity supplies while continuing the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy systems.
